Tight skin? Repair your skin barrier.

The first cold spells are setting in, the heating is switched back on, and your face starts to feel tight after a shower or when you wash your face. If your skin feels tight in autumn, it’s not inevitable: it’s simply reacting to the change of season. Here’s why this happens, how to recognise it, and what facial moisturising routine to follow.

Why does the skin feel tight in autumn?

The change of season brings with it several factors that stress the skin:

  • The cold and wind, which dry out the skin’s surface.
  • Central heating, which dries out the air indoors and speeds up the evaporation of moisture from the skin’s surface.
  • Hot showers and water, which are pleasant but strip away some of the skin’s protective lipids.
  • Temperature differences between indoors and outdoors, which constantly put the skin under strain.
  • Unchanged skincare routines: the light summer skincare routine is no longer always sufficient when the air turns colder.

The skin barrier: a defence mechanism that needs looking after

The outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, forms the skin barrier. It is often thought of as a wall: the cells are the bricks, and the lipids (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids) act as the mortar. When this ‘cement’ breaks down, water escapes more easily and irritants penetrate more readily.

A useful distinction: dry skin lacks lipids, whilst dehydrated skin lacks water. The two conditions can coexist, and even oily or combination skin can become dehydrated. In all cases, the barrier is under strain.

Signs of a compromised skin barrier

  • a tight, tugging sensation, especially after cleansing;
  • redness, a stinging sensation or skin that has become reactive;
  • rough patches or flaky skin;
  • a dull complexion and skin that ‘soaks up’ cream without appearing to be fully nourished.

Facial moisturising: the 5-step autumn routine

1. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water

Over-cleansing or using a harsh cleanser can make your skin feel tight. Opt for a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and rinse with lukewarm rather than hot water. There’s no need to massage for too long: apply, work into a lather, then rinse.

2. Moisturise morning and evening

This is the key step. A daily moisturiser helps to replenish moisture and minimise water loss. Apply it preferably to slightly damp skin, straight after cleansing, to better lock in moisture on the skin’s surface.

Apply HYDRAFAC Light Cream.

3. Choose the right texture for your skin

If your summer cream feels insufficient, or conversely too rich for your combination skin, adjust the texture rather than layering on products.

4. Be gentle with your skin

Space out exfoliation sessions and limit the use of potent active ingredients (retinol, acids) whilst your skin still feels tight. Exfoliants that are too harsh can damage the skin barrier.

5. Don't forget sun protection

UV rays are still present in autumn. Daily sun protection helps to preserve the skin barrier.

As for your daily routine, remember to air out heated rooms and limit the length of hot showers.

When should you seek advice?

If your skin continues to feel tight despite following a suitable skincare routine, or if this is accompanied by marked redness, severe itching or spreading patches, speak to a doctor or dermatologist. According to some studies, restoring the skin barrier to good condition can take several months of regular care. Patience and consistency are therefore essential.

FAQ: Tight skin in autumn

Why does my skin feel tight in autumn?

Cold weather, wind, central heating and hot showers weaken the skin barrier. As a result, the skin retains less moisture and feels tight.

Dry or dehydrated skin: what's the difference?

Dry skin lacks lipids, whilst dehydrated skin lacks water. The two conditions can occur together, and even oily skin can be dehydrated.

Should you moisturise in the morning and evening?

Yes, regular daily moisturising is the basic step. Adjust the texture according to how comfortable your skin feels.

Can HYDRAFAC be used under make-up?

The light cream is recommended as a good make-up base. Apply it to clean skin and allow it to absorb before applying make-up.
